UK COVID-19 variant which started from London and has reached several countries, and now Pakistan has also confirmed the 3rd case.

It is confirmed by Iqrar ul Hassan in his recent tweet that it’s the 3rd confirmed case of the UK COVID-19 variant.

In this tweet, the news is shared which declares that 3 out 12 people coming from Britain to Pakistan are positive for the new variant.

Iqrar captioned the tweet by asking pity, help, and blessings from Allah and wrote, “may Allah blesses everyone”

UK COVID-19 variant spreading faster than others

This new variant reported its 1rst confirmed case in Pakistan on Tuesday, 29th of December 2020.

The national command and operation center later released a statement, saying two more patients admitted to the national institute of health in Islamabad also showed the new variant.

Health and Population Welfare department wrote, “The health department of Sindh took 12 COVID samples of UK returnees for genotyping.

Out of which 6 were positive and 3 showed the new variant of the COVID virus in the 1rst phase.

The genotyping showed a 95{7d6bb1f761e691f027164c9fe6d1ebbc4659a250013ce39dc45a15ede39dbac5} match of the new variant from the UK. These samples will go through another phase of genotyping.

Meanwhile, the contact tracing of these patients is in process and their contacts are being isolated also.”

Told by the World Health Organization, this new strain was identified in southeastern England back in September.

It has been spread in the area ever since and has reached Pakistan too.

Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO’s technical lead on COVID-19 said, “what we understand is that it does have increased transmissibility, in terms of its ability to spread.”

According to the researcher, this new UK COVID-19 variant may have originated in an immunocompromised patient.

As stated by Science Magazine, the new SARS-CoV-2 variant was first discovered in the UK and appears to spread faster than others.

The news of a new variant coming to Pakistan is concerning because it is on average of 56{7d6bb1f761e691f027164c9fe6d1ebbc4659a250013ce39dc45a15ede39dbac5} more contagious.

It is also spreading fast and is likely to raise hospitalizations and deaths to reach higher levels in 2021.
