He got his early education from Dovedale Primary School, and later on, he enrolled himself in Quarry Bank High School from the year 1952 till 1957. At the age of 16, he formed his band by the name of Quarry Men after getting inspired by Elvis Presley. In 1958 he lost his mother in a car accident.
