Serena Williams and Sloane Stephens started the third round of the U.S. Open at Arthur Ashe Stadium.Williams won 6 of 23 Grand Slam singles titles at Flushing Meadows; Stephens won the 2017 title in New York. Other third-round winners on Saturday included Andrei Rublev, who was 10th in the men’s draw, and Elise Mertens, who was 16th in the women’s category.

Kristina Mladenovic and her partner Timea Babos withdrew from the U.S. Open women’s doubles after public health officials in Nassau County, New York issued a quarantine notice to Mladenovic. The U.S. Tennis Association announced its withdrawal on Saturday, saying it “has an obligation to comply with government guidance.”

After contact tracing determined that she might be exposed to COVID-19 by the only contestant, Benoit Paire, who tested positive, Mladenovic was one of seven players who were subject to additional restrictions during the game.

Mladenovic was allowed to continue singles matches. She won the first round, but lost the second round after leading 6-1, 5-1.

Maria Sakkari eliminated the mistake-prone American teenager Amanda Anisimova 6-3 and 6-1 in only 55 minutes, thus entering for the second time in a row Grand Slam tournament. The 22nd seed Anisimova turned 19 on Monday and ended with 28 non-mandatory errors, with only 4 winners. Sakkari made eight mistakes.

Sakkari, who planted the No. 15 seed, entered 2020 with a 0-7 record in the third round of the main tournament.

Usually, the Grand Slam circuit will go to Paris and London between Melbourne and New York. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the French Open was postponed from May to late September, and the Wimbledon Tennis Open was cancelled for the first time in 75 years.

Sakkari will play Serena Williams or Sloane Stephens next.

With the third round of the game on Wednesday, the sun was shining and the temperature was in the mid-1970s in Fahrenheit.

The highlight of the afternoon is expected to be Serena Williams’s game against Sloan Stephens at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Williams has 23 Grand Slam singles titles, including 6 in New York. Stephens won the 2017 U.S. Open.
