In 2014 from Sydney Morning Herald, he received Pick of the Week, From the New York Times Book Review, and received Paperback Row, for Literary he received Ernest J. Gaines Award, Lannan Literary Fellowship award in Fiction, Hemingway Debut Fiction Award, Hurston Wright Legacy Award, Saroyan International Prize For Writing and Black Caucus of the American Library Association of Honor Book. In 2015 from Portland Community College he received Diamond Alumni Award and Everybody Reads Selection award from Multnomah County Oregon. In 2016 he received two awards from Whiting Writers’ Award and TED.
