A former staff attorney for US President Donald Trump, Michael Cohen will be released from federal prison to serve the rest of his sentence under house arrest for the pandemic, a person close with the situation told The Associated Press.
Cohen is incarcerated at FCI Otisville in New York, after pleading guilty to various charges, including financial fraud in the election campaign and lying to Congress.
Before his release, he will be quarantined for 14 days. Government statistics show that 14 inmates and seven members of the jail staff tested positive.
The lawyer will serve the rest of his sentence at home, according to the source, who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because he was unable to discuss the matter publicly.
Cohen’s release comes as activists and congressional leaders have been putting pressure on the Justice Department for weeks to allow at-risk prisoners to leave before a possible outbreak of the virus, alleging that public health guidelines maintain a distance of 1.8 meters (six feet) is almost impossible behind bars.
Earlier this month, Attorney General William Barr ordered the Bureau of Prisons to increase the use of house arrest and expedite the release of at-risk prisoners who could benefit from this measure, starting with the three prisons identified as outbreaks of contagion. Otisville is not one of them.
