World Mental Health Day is on October 10, 2022, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The phrase “making mental health & well-being for all a global priority” focuses on reforming mental health services on a massive scale over the world.

According to the WHO, one in eight persons worldwide had a mental disorder in 2019 — a statistic that does not account for the detrimental impacts of the COVID-19 epidemic on mental health. During the pandemic, there were significant disruptions in mental health care, which widened the treatment gap for numerous individuals.

Care for the mental health of patients is gaining importance. While patients are in the pharmacy for unrelated reasons, they might be surveyed to determine their mental health status.

Equally vital is training in mental health first aid and trauma-informed care for pharmacy employees. This understanding can assist professionals in recognizing mental health crises and treating patients with a history of trauma with sensitivity.

Working with state associations and advocacy groups is also an important aspect of helping the mental health of patients. These organizations play a crucial role in pharmacy innovation and lobbying, and they also help pass important laws.

Most importantly, pharmacists must take care of their own mental health. It can be challenging to prioritize mental wellness when caring for others when pharmacists face burnout and high stress levels.

There are numerous strategies for pharmacists to maintain their mental health. The National Institute of Mental Health recommends the following: regular exercise, nutritious diet, making sleep a priority, attempting soothing hobbies, creating goals and priorities, practicing thankfulness, focusing on the positive, and maintaining social connections.
