The former captain, aged 35, conveyed to India skipper Rohit Sharma and the team management that specific personal situations require his presence and full attention.

The five-Test series kicks off in Hyderabad on Thursday. Kohli’s decision coincides with England batter Harry Brook’s return to the UK for personal reasons.

Having played 113 Tests for India and ranking fourth on the all-time leading run-scorers list with 8,848 runs, Kohli’s absence is notable.

This marks the first Test he will miss in over two years, the last being due to a back spasm against South Africa in Johannesburg.

A statement from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) highlighted Kohli’s commitment to representing the country but acknowledged the imperative of addressing personal matters.

The BCCI urged media and fans to respect Kohli’s privacy and refrain from speculating about the nature of his personal reasons.

A replacement for Kohli in the squad will be named. Kohli, who led the side in 68 Tests from 2014 to 2022, continues to be a pivotal figure in Indian cricket.
