 What is Cinco de Mayo?

On the date of today, the Mexican Army defeated the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Today is the day of victory of the Mexican Army under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza. 

The Mexican army is very small against the French army, but the victory boosts the morale of the Mexicans. But it could not last long, because, after one year, French again attacked Mexican with a very large army and that time Mexico could not defeat the French. But also, French victory could not last longer than three years. 

The day became more popular in the United States than Mexico and more popularly celebrated in the US than Mexico. Now the day has become associated with the Mexican-American culture. 

This celebration started in California, from 1863, it has been observed annually, and it gained nationwide fame in the 1980s.

How do Mexicans celebrate Cinco de Mayo?

In Mexico, mainly in the state of Puebla, where Zaragoza’s victory occurred, is observed, although other parts of the Mexico country also take part in it. Traditions include recreations of the Battle of Puebla, military parades, and other festive events.
